When Neighbors Become Emergency Responders

Scripture: “For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: Love your neighbor as yourself.” — Galatians 5:14 

When Hurricane Sally struck the Gulf Coast in 2020, the winds tore through roofs, the rain swallowed streets, and the darkness of power outages settled over entire communities. Yet in the middle of that chaos, something stronger than the storm began to rise—neighbor love. 

In one neighborhood, floodwaters trapped a man whose boat had been overtaken by the surge. Before professional emergency responders could reach him, neighbor love mobilized neighbors into action and they rescued him. They lived the law of neighbor love because they were compelled by compassion. They simply acted out of love. 

In Fairhope and Gulf Shores, neighbors shared generators with neighbors who needed power for medical devices. Others cooked meals on grills and walked door to door offering hot food, water, and comfort. Cleanup crews formed without being asked—people with chainsaws, gloves, and strong backs clearing debris from the yards of elderly residents. Some opened their homes during the storm, inviting neighbors into safer rooms when the winds became too violent. 

On that day when Jesus says to each one of these neighbors: I needed electrical power for my medical devices and you provided it; I was hungry and you fed me; I was thirsty and you gave me something drink; I was old and trapped by the storm and you rescued me; I had no place to stay after the storm and you provided me shelter. What Will Jesus Say?

Will he tell each of you to go to the right as one of his sheep to have everlasting life because you lived the commandment of neighbor love?

Reflection:  s Well done Alabama and Pensacola neighbors! In far reaching emergencies, people have a heightened sense of awareness of the immediate needs of others. This awareness comes out of shared experience of the emergency itself. During the doldrum of everyday life, some people experience the emergent need for the same life sustaining help and we rise up to meet those needs.

Prayer: Dear Lord, prepare us in season and out of season so that we are ready and alert to the needs of that neighbor you would have us show neighbor love in their time of need or personal emergency. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me the courage  to respond with compassion, generosity, and faith. Make me a living example of Your love wherever you send me.
